What BEE Star Ratings Actually Tell You

The star label is genuinely useful and routinely misread. It compares machines of similar size and type — not machines in general — and the bar moves.

India’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency rates appliances from one to five stars, and the label carries more information than the star count that everyone reads.

Stars are relative, not absolute

A star rating compares an appliance against others of similar type and capacity. It does not say “this uses little electricity” — it says “this uses little for its class”.

The practical consequence catches people out constantly: a 5-star 500-litre refrigerator can consume more electricity than a 3-star 200-litre one. If you are choosing between capacities, the stars will not tell you which uses less power. The consumption figure will.

Read the number, not the stars

Every label carries an annual energy consumption figure in units (kWh). That is the number to compare, because it is absolute rather than relative, and it already accounts for the cycling behaviour that makes raw wattage misleading.

Put that figure into the running cost calculator with your own tariff and you get a directly comparable rupee amount.

The bar moves

BEE periodically revises the thresholds, and ratings are tied to a validity period printed on the label. What earned five stars several years ago may earn fewer under current rules — not because the machine changed, but because the standard tightened.

This matters when buying old stock or comparing a review from a few years back. Check the year on the label rather than assuming stars are comparable across time.

When the premium is worth paying

Efficiency costs more up front and saves later, so the arithmetic depends entirely on how much you run the thing.

  • An air conditioner used several hours a day for months — the premium usually repays quickly.
  • A refrigerator — runs continuously all year, so efficiency compounds.
  • A washing machine used twice a week, or a second fridge that is mostly empty — the premium may never repay.

The calculator answers this for your usage rather than in the abstract, which is the only way the question has an answer.
