Sizing a Fridge and a Washing Machine

The two appliances people most often buy too large, and the household-size rules of thumb that get you close.

In short

  • Roughly 100–120 litres of fridge for the first two people, plus 50–60 for each additional person.
  • Roughly 1 kg of washer drum capacity per person, rounded up for bedding.
  • Oversizing costs you every month of the appliance's life, not once at purchase.
  • How you shop and wash matters more than headcount alone.

Both of these are commonly bought a size too big, on the reasoning that spare capacity is harmless. It is not free: a larger fridge cools a larger volume every hour of every day for a decade, and a larger washer uses more water and power per cycle.

Refrigerators

A workable starting point is 100 to 120 litres for the first two people, plus 50 to 60 litres for each additional person. A family of four lands somewhere around 250 to 300 litres.

Adjust for how you actually shop:

  • Weekly bulk shopping — go up a size; everything arrives at once.
  • Daily fresh buying, common in much of India — go down; the fridge is a buffer, not a warehouse.
  • A lot of frozen food — prioritise freezer share rather than total volume.
  • Frequent entertaining — occasional peaks do not justify permanent capacity; a full fridge actually runs more efficiently than an empty one.

Door configuration affects usable space more than the litre figure suggests. Multi-door layouts lose volume to partitions, so compare usable arrangement, not just the number on the sticker.

Washing machines

A reasonable rule is about 1 kg of drum capacity per person, then round up so bedding fits. A family of four is generally well served by 6.5 to 7.5 kg.

The binding constraint is usually not clothes but the largest single item you need to wash. A double duvet needs a drum considerably larger than your weekly laundry volume implies, and that one item often decides the size.

Two things worth knowing:

  • A half-empty drum is inefficient. Many machines use nearly as much water and heat for a small load as a full one, unless they have genuine load sensing.
  • Front-load machines generally use less water and clean better; top-load are usually cheaper and quicker. Both are defensible; the efficiency gap is real but so is the price gap.

The general point

For both, capacity you rarely use is a cost you always pay. Buy for your normal week and accept that the occasional heavy week takes two loads.
